Image gallery

I often see pohtos of costumes in the newest costume and random costume part that don't show up in the gallery, and the only way I can look at them is if they randomly show up in these parts.

Not sure why this is, but I thought I'd mention it :)

BTW, thought you'd like to know that I came up with a term for some clearly inaccurate historical costumes, including some of my own fantasies. I call them 'Hysterical' because it's good to laugh every once in a while - even at yourself ;}

Lina, I agree that the

Lina,

I agree that the categories should grow as more images are added. As far as having everything that goes into a category be accurate as to period and type, I don't think that the majority of Costume Maker readers are really going to be that anal and OCD about it. As Kathelyne said, some people have no idea what absolutely historical means. And the one thing a good costumer recognizes is that you put your own inimitable stamp on your projects influenced by how you sew, your techniques, your particular likes in cloth and color, trim and line.

Even when I've made display costume for museums, I can still tell that they are my interpretation of the era desired influenced by the above. We can't help putting our 'signature' techniques on our work, just as no two artists will handle paint and depictions the same way.

And, any Hollywood costumer or fashion historian will tell you that 'period' productions are still influenced by the fashion of the present that it's produced in, i.e. 1960s Beehive hairdo's for the original Star Trek with William Shatner and crew, eyeshadow colors and styles on Liz Taylor's Cleopatra, the 1970s hairstyles of the Star Wars series.

Janet Arnold also writes that there may be no substitute for some of the materials used in the original period. For instance, real 'Cloth of Gold' used in Elizabethan era court wear would be cost prohibitive to make if you could find a weaver familiar with it. Or, having the resources to sew the gazillion pearls on Queen Liz's gown would be remarkable, let alone having the time to do it if you DID have real matched pearls by the thousands. Real silver Assuit is as rare and as expensive as hen's teeth. I have a scarf made of it but would not dare use it in any period Middle Eastern folkloric costume.

There are going to be costume Nazis everywhere. I hope that the light hearted and have-fun feel of CMM doesn't cater to them. And posting inaccurate costumes in categories is still a good learning tool by comparison. Even us old timers can learn.

I still can't see the categories!

Thanks for the input,

Thanks for the input, everyone!

So I gathered that it'd be best to not have subcategories, and that there are still problems with seeing the categories already there? I'll try to fix that asap.

I think I've gotten the

I think I've gotten the categories to show up again when uploading images, except I still can't get rid of the "none" category. That one bothers me too..

I like your suggestion queenlint1 for a page with all the images at once (but I haven't quite figured out how to get it to work yet). ^^ I hope I can set one up soon.

Also, what would you guys think if there were sub-categories for historical clothing or any of the other galleries? If you think it's a good idea and have any suggestions for sub-categories I'd really appreciate it!

Oh, and I'm still trying to get it so that a user's submitted images show up on their profile page. I hope I can get that working soon too!

Unfortunatly the categories

Unfortunatly the categories still aren't showing for me, when I upload a photo or when trying to view the gallery- which I can't do as I can't see the cattegories. When I upload I can do it in none or misc, however when I view the images I see only the misc category with no images in.

I like the idea of keeping with borad categories- if there is a lot of one particular type of thing in a category then maybe consider splitting them, but follow the demand rather than making heaps to start with.

That said, I would love sub cattegories of erras in the Historical one, but I don't think theres any point as it would really stop non-historical clothing being put there in the future (last time I checked there wasn't any, but what some people think is historical...) which is one of the reasons I would like it, as most of the non-historical clothing can be put into a broad erra anyway (ie, midje-evil-oid (or medieval) and 'Victorianish' (Victorian)) and there isn't enough historical clothing for there to be a need for more precise cattegories. Even if there was, where would you split them? It would involve indepth study of every historical period to do that. So while I would love it- I don't think its worth it.

Hrm... personally, I don't

Hrm... personally, I don't know if having too many sub-galleries would be a good idea - people might get bogged down in one little area, or it might be confusing (such as, if I make a historically accurate bustle-dress, but wear it with faerie wings, where does it go? Or if a game is made into an anime (such as Star Ocean EX...) where does it go? Or sorting through different clothing things, like the difference between loli, goth, gothic lolita, fruits, etc... that could be a little overwhelming!)

But, I think having a historical section, a clothing section, a cosplay section, and a costumes section might be a good idea.

Although, I've struggled with having a separate section for cosplay and costumes on my site, personally, because they're kind of the same thing, but there are some really rabid cosplayers who insist that it has to be anime-related or from a Japanese origin to be considered cosplay -____-; I guess it just goes for your opinion on that one ;P

Why watch anime when you can be anime?

Kathelyn,

I'm having the same issues as you with posting costumes. I like the idea of a gallery because it's a good way to get and give inspiration and see what fellow costumers are up to.

Lina, day I suggest that ALL of the pictures show up at once, whether in the cosplay, historical and miscellaneous galleries and that we do away with the 'none' category?

They also don't show up unless you reload the page to show up different costumes.

Ok, thanks! Those pictures

Ok, thanks! Those pictures are in, but now even more have been added and they are not. Is there some problem that means pictures added are not going into the galleries?

Thanks for letting me know!

Thanks for letting me know! I've put the past missing costumes back in the galleries and I'll try to fix the problem asap. ^^

Ok, I just went to submit and image and I had the options for galleries of none and misc. The galleries used to show up in the gallery list, somaybe thats why the images aren't automatically going into the galleries now?
